Maltese Temperament: Does It Suit Your Lifestyle?

It is important to consider the temperament of a dog before choosing it as a pet.  Someone looking this deeply into the characteristics of the Maltese dog truly wants what is best for both the dog and the owner.  If this dog were not extremely gentle, then perhaps it would not be a good choice to have around small children.  If this dog had a periodical mean streak, then perhaps that is not the type of personality you would like to have in a dog.  There are many different things to consider when choosing a new dog, and this section will describe the temperament of the Maltese dog.

What to Expect From the Temperament of a Maltese Terrier

When it comes to temperament, there are not many dogs that have a better one than the Maltese terrier.  It has been known for many years that this dog makes a great companion.  It happens to be one of the gentlest small dogs that there is, making it a good choice to have around small children.  It is an energetic dog and is usually willing to play, but it also happens to be highly intelligent and will remain calm around small children or babies.  Also, perhaps for the person that does not have a boatload of time on his/her hands, a Maltese terrier is easier to train than most dogs due to its intelligence.  The dog will pick up new tricks and behaviors quickly, making the teaching process easier and a lot less stressful for the owner.

Of course these dogs are tiny.  That is obvious to anyone looking at a picture of the Maltese terrier or even seeing it in person.  What someone may not know about this dog is that it can be fearless of anything or anyone.  That being said, it may bark incessantly at a stranger or someone walking down the street because the dog believes strongly in protecting its master.  The Maltese, as stated before, was bred to be a companion dog and will most certainly do everything in its power to keep the owner safe.  That being said, it also means that this dog does not deal well with separation.  People who are constantly out of town or on vacation should not consider getting this dog as a pet because it will not work out.

This good-natured dog can be a great fit to any family in a new home or a single person in an apartment.  The high energy and positive attitude this dog brings can brighten almost any mood and provide the companionship and affection that every good owner deserves.  However, this tiny dog can become over-protective and perhaps even bite someone it does not know, but that just means the Maltese terrier loves its family.  If it is exposed to someone enough, it will most certainly warm up to that person and treat him/her as if he/she were an actual part of the family.  If you are looking for a dog with a temperament that is highly affectionate, intelligent, caring dog that is highly energetic at times but gentle when it has to be, then the Maltese terrier could very well be the dog for you. The physical appearance of the Maltese Terrier can certainly be deemed as “cute” and the way it will act around children and people it is comfortable with will be fun to watch for years to come.
