Rescuing or adopting
a Maltese terrier can be a great thing for the right person. If you are someone
who is interested in a show quality Maltese terrier, for example, a Maltese terrier
rescue/adoption may not be your best bet. But if you’re just looking to give a
dog in need a great home, you could find the experience to be very rewarding.
Accepting
the Unknown
When you rescue or adopt a Maltese terrier you have to be
comfortable with the fact that you will probably not be privy to the dog’s genealogical
history, as you would if you purchased the dog from a breeder. If you hope to
have a show winning Maltese terrier, or hope to find a dog worthy of breeding
someday, than you probably would not be comfortable with a Maltese terrier rescue/adoption,
and should consider going through a breeder instead.
If, on the other hand,
you’re not as concerned with the pedigree of the Maltese terrier, and just want
to give a dog a home, a Maltese terrier rescue/adoption could be ideal for you.
There are still some unknown factors you have to be comfortable contending with,
like the state of the dog’s last home if it had one, and any bad behaviors he/she
may have acquired as a result, but this can be overcome with some patience and
a little obedience training.
Another benefit to rescuing or adopting a
Maltese terrier is the cost. Most rescue/adoption pets can be acquired for a very
small cost, while purebred dogs from a licensed breeder can be quite expensive.
If it’s the dog you love, and not its history, or you simply can’t afford a pure
bred dog, a Maltese terrier rescue/adoption is the perfect solution for you. You
can offer a home to the breed of dog you love, and not break your bank in doing
so.
It is possible that you could end up with a show quality Maltese terrier
through a rescue/adoption, but there are no guarantees. Again, if showing or breeding
is your main priority a Maltese terrier rescue/adoption is probably not for you.
That isn’t to say that a rescued or adopted pet requires less care than a purebred
pet. In fact, a Maltese terrier rescue/adoption could require slightly more care
in many circumstances depending on the condition of the dog you receive.
Just
go into your Maltese terrier rescue/adoption with as much information as you can
find, and with low expectations of your new Maltese terrier. With love and patience
