Maltese Terrier Training

Bringing home a new Maltese terrier puppy can be overwhelming for both you and the puppy. The puppy will be bombarded with a new environment and new people, so try to let him or her get acclimated slowly. At the same time, you will want to softly introduce certain elements to make the transition into training your Maltese terrier for obedience smooth. Here is a basic outline of some things you can do to keep your Maltese terrier happy, healthy, safe and well prepared for obedience training.

Help your Maltese terrier learn to have a positive association with things like their crate, leash/collar, grooming table, even the trip to the veterinarian. Introduce these things one at a time and let your puppy gain comfort on their own terms. For example, introduce a collar to your puppy and let him/her get comfortable wearing it before you try to attach a leash. Once the lease is introduced ease into situations in which the puppy will be pushing the bounds of the leash. The same rules should apply to introducing your new puppy to people. Ease the puppy into being around more and more people.

One of the biggest concerns in bringing home a new puppy is potty training. You can make potty training your Maltese terrier easiest by creating a schedule and adhering to it. The more committed you are to a set schedule, the quicker your puppy will adapt. Pick several times during the day to take your puppy outside to relieve him/her self. Puppies have not yet learned how to control themselves, so keep this in mind when you set your schedule. When you take your puppy outside and he/she successfully relieves him/her self reward them with positive verbal cues, even a treat or two. Make the rewarded behavior very clear.

Because Maltese terriers have a playful temperament by nature you can expect them to be a little rambunctious at times. Take this as an opportunity to engage in some fun with them. A playful puppy is a happy puppy. If you’re concerned about your Maltese terrier puppy chewing on things they shouldn’t, make it clear to the puppy which items are chewable toys by keeping them in a central location, and encourage the puppy to play with them. Don’t overwhelm the puppy by introducing too many toys at once, otherwise the line between toys and non-toys might be a little confusing.
