Figuring Out the Right Diet to Feed Your Maltese Terrier

Many new Maltese Terrier owners wonder what diet they should incorporate into their Maltese Terrier care routine. They might wonder which food has the most nutritional value. They also might wonder how much food their dog needs. Feeding your dog the right balance of food is one of the most important aspects of your Maltese Terrier’s care and should be taken quite seriously!

Do I Need to Supplement?

Some people incorporate vitamin supplements into their Maltese Terrier care routine. This is done in the hopes of improving the dog’s coat and skin condition. Some owners might add a raw egg into the dog’s diet from time to time. While there does not seem to be any harm in supplementing your dog’s diet, unless it is supplemented with table scraps, there is really no reason to do so, unless the vet tells you to.

Improving Coat through Diet

You can, however, improve your Maltese Terrier’s coat simply through his diet. If you want the best possible coat on your dog, then make sure the food you are feeding your dog has plenty of fatty acids, as well as good carbohydrates. An example of a good food for a Maltese Terrier’s coat is a lamb and rice formulated dry dog food.

Dry Versus Wet Food

Another common question about Maltese Terrier care is whether to use dry or wet dog food. Unless you are getting frequent care for your dog’s teeth, dry food is the better option. It helps to cut down on the amount of tartar that builds up on your dog’s teeth. For those owners who prefer to feed their dog canned food, some form of hard treat should be incorporated into the diet to keep the dog’s teeth free from tartar.

Proper Feeding Amount

While there is no set amount that is the perfect option when choosing how much you should feed your dog when handling his Maltese Terrier care, a good rule of thumb is to feed him two or three times a day, only what he will consume in a few minutes. Try not to leave food sitting out for him to have constant access to. A bored dog will overeat, and a hungry dog will eat when food is set before him. Even if it takes a few days to get into this routine, it is the healthiest way to feed your dog.

Adding Some Variety

Your Maltese Terrier care regimen can involve the same food every single day, and your dog will not care in the least. If you want to vary your dog’s diet some, the best way to do so is to give him an occasional home cooked treat, not changing his food. Changing your dog’s food can give his digestive system a shock, creating gas and bloating that is uncomfortable for your dog, and annoying for you. There are, however, some delicacies you can cook for your Maltese Terrier, which can add a small amount of variety to your dog’s diet, without sending his digestive system for a loop!
